Energy is the ability to do work. It can be found in many different forms. Every type of energy has its own properties, uses, and ways of being converted from one form to another. The International System (SI) of Units of measurement of energy is the joule. There are many different types of energy in the world around us. Kinetic energy is an object’s movement or motion because it has mass and speed. Kinetic energy can be transferred into other types of energy like sound, light, or heat waves, which are also forms of kinetic energy.
Energy is a physical quantity which can be transferred from one object to another. The type of energy will determine how it is transferred and its impact on the objects involved. There are different types of energy: potential energy, kinetic energy, and chemical energy.
Potential Energy: Potential energy is stored in an object or system by virtue of its position relative to other objects or systems. An object at the top of a mountain has more potential energy than an object at sea level because gravity provides the force necessary to release this potential energy. Potential energy is classified into two types, and they are:
- Gravitational Potential Energy
- Elastic Potential Energy

Kinetic Energy: It is the measure of the work an object can do by its motion. It’s the energy of a moving object. Kinetic energy is proportional to the square of the velocity. The kinetic energy of an object equals one-half times its mass times its velocity squared. It is given by the formula,
Chemical Energy: Chemical reactions create thermal (heat) and light (radiant) forms of chemical energy from chemical bonds between atoms in molecules or crystals.
Different types of energy are used in everyday life. Different sources of energy can be used to create different types of energy. For example, solar power is a type of renewable energy that can be obtained from the sun. The heat from the sun is converted into thermal or kinetic energy, which can then be converted into electricity through a photovoltaic panel.
Energy is an important part of our everyday lives. Throughout the day, we use energy in different ways. We spend a lot of energy performing activities like eating, drinking, washing, walking, and sitting. Many different types of energy can be used in our everyday lives. Potential energy is stored up energy released when something moves or changes position, such as gravity acting on a ball at the top of a hill. The food that we consume has potential energy stored in it. The pendulum also features potential energy. Kinetic energy is the type of energy that something has because it’s moving, like an object rolling down a hill or a pendulum swinging back and forth. Day-to-day activities like cycling and playing involve kinetic energy.
